The above scholarships are awarded based on the application for admission to NIU (with the exception of the University Scholars - see below). Some scholarships are competitive and may not be awarded to all qualified students. Students must meet all academic criteria, including both composite ACT score (or SAT equivalent) and either the class rank or equivalent grade point average using a 4.0 scale. The highest composite ACT score or SAT (math plus verbal) will be used; NIU does not superscore.
Scholarships will be awarded as long as funds remain available - students should be admitted to NIU for fall 2014 by the priority deadline of December 1, 2013 to be considered for the maximum scholarship amount. (Since December 1 falls on a weekend, the deadline for students to be admitted to NIU has been extended to December 2, 2013).
Students intending to enroll in Spring 2014 must be admitted by October 1, 2013 in order to receive consideration for merit scholarships. Due to limited funding, not all qualifed students may receive awards.
Students who meet the minimum criteria for the University Scholars and who are admitted by the priority deadline will be asked to submit additional application materials. Students in this category will be guaranteed the NIU Scholars, but can participate in an optional application and/or interview competition for the University Scholars.
Admitted students will be awarded the highest level scholarship for which they are eligible, based on available funding. Other than the Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship and the Huskie Legacy Award, merit scholarships cannot be combined with other merit scholarships on this list. The University Scholars award cannot be combined with any other award.
Transfer students are eligible for the NIU Transfer Scholarship, the Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship, and the Huskie Legacy Award, as funds remain available. In addition, an application for the Transfer Residential Scholarship will be available in the spring.
Students must be enrolled full-time at NIU in order to be eligible to receive any scholarship offered. With the exception of the University Scholars, the merit scholarships listed above will be applied toward tuition charges only.
The Scholarship Office and the Student Financial Aid Office will work together to maximize students' financial opportunities, but not all estimated awards may be utilized due to funding restrictions. Students should file the FAFSA (available January 1, 2014) by the priority filing date of March 1, 2014 to be considered for the most financial aid.
